Message from the Principal
Whittaker Elementary School
It is with a grateful heart and great excitement that I return home to serve as principal of Whittaker Elementary School. This school holds a very special place in my life—not only as a former Whittaker teacher, but also as a proud parent of two sons who once walked these very halls as Whittaker scholars.
I bring with me a wide range of educational experiences that continue to shape my leadership and passion for student success. I have served 11 years as a classroom teacher in grades 4K, 1st, 4th, and 5th, 6 years as an assistant principal at both the elementary and middle school levels, 12 years as a principal in elementary and middle schools, and 4 years in a central office role supporting schools across the district. Each role has strengthened my commitment to children, families, and educators.
Our motto this year says it best:
“Empowering young minds one day at a time to sustain success that will last a lifetime!”
At Whittaker Elementary, our goal is to provide a challenging and stimulating teaching and learning environment that is safe, nurturing, and student-centered. We are committed to preparing our scholars for the future—whether that pathway leads to college, career readiness, or both. Every child deserves high expectations, strong support, and opportunities to discover their unique gifts.
I believe deeply in the power of partnership. When families, staff, and the community work together with a shared vision, our scholars thrive. I am honored to lead such a dedicated school family and look forward to a year filled with growth, excellence, and success for every Whittaker scholar.
Thank you for trusting us with your children. Together, we will continue building a strong foundation for lifelong learning.
With pride and purpose,
Dr. Charlene Stokes

I am super excited for the opportunity to serve as the newly appointed Assistant Principal of Whittaker Elementary School (WES)! It is an honor to be chosen to work alongside our Principal, Mrs. Denise Simpson. As a family, we will continue to raise the bar of academic excellence. I will advocate for our team of dedicated educators, involved parents, and student learners.
I have served as a devoted professional school counselor in Orangeburg County School District for 25+ years. I am a proud alumnus of South Carolina State University where I earned both my Bachelor’s and Master’s Degree. Later, I went on to receive a Doctor of Education: Educational Leadership from Nova Southeastern University. I am also National Board Certified. I enjoy spending time with my family, traveling to my daughter’s softball games, watching the Game Show Network, and walking our family pet.
I am dedicated to holding high standards in student achievements, fostering positive school & family relationships, and communicating with stakeholders. I am ready to meet and work with the WES Family!
